Course Description:

This two-session charcoal portrait workshop is designed for students who want to strengthen their rendering skills, value control, and sense of likeness without focusing on preliminary drawing or construction. Participants will work from pre-drawn and transferred images, allowing the class to concentrate fully on how charcoal can be used to model form, create depth, and refine facial features through value.

The workshop emphasizes deliberate observation, controlled mark-making, and subtle value relationships. Students will learn how to use a limited set of materials effectively, develop a reusable personal value scale, and apply consistent lighting logic across the portrait. By working from both a provided demonstration image and a personally chosen reference, students will leave with practical tools and a deeper understanding of portrait rendering that can be applied to future work in any medium.

This class is intended for students with some basic familiarity with drawing materials, though advanced drawing experience is not required.
